COMMUNITY

Metchosin is a rural community within the Capital Regional District, with a population of over 4,700 people. The District’s boundaries encompass 17,396 acres (7,040 hectares) of land. The District was incorporated in 1984.

 

Facts and figures aside, Metchosin is a community that…

  • Stretches from the ocean shoreline into the uplands areas of the Sooke Hills.

  • Contains unique environmental features, like the salt marsh of Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park, Douglas fir ecosystem, rare plant habitats, and in land wetlands used by birds and water fowl.

  • Grows food for Vancouver Island, with over 20 working farms in the District.

  • Is home to vital parks in the CRD network – Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park, Albert Head Lagoon, Sooke Wilderness Park, Matheson Lake Park, Devonian Regional Park.

  • Is the near neighbour to the Scia’new First Nation.

  • Is home to Hans Helgesen Elementary School and the Montessori School.

  • Is the home to DND Rocky Point and William Head Institution.

  • Welcomes students from all over the world during their studies at Pearson College.

  • Pack its municipal hall on Friday night Talk and Walk sessions, learning about turkey vultures, mushrooms, invasive plant eradication and habitat restoration.

The APRM

The APRM is dedicated to preserving the rural life and peaceful co-existence of homes, farmlands, forests, natural habitats and trails in our community. The APRM engages individuals and organizations through solid working relationships in the task of protecting our rural values. It informs members and the general public of threats, opportunities and issues impacting our future as a rural community.
